Title: Communications Director
ALIGN: the Alliance for a Greater New York unites labor and community for a more just and sustainable New York. Formed by the merger of New York Jobs with Justice and Urban Agenda, ALIGN builds upon 20 years of creating good jobs, healthy communities, and a more accountable democracy for all New Yorkers. Successes include the "Trades and Residents for Apprenticeship Development and Economic Success" (TRADES) project, which has created over 300 careers in construction for local public housing residents through New York City Public Housing Authority capital repairs; securing one of the nation’s first municipal green buildings policies, which has eliminated over 200,000 metric tons of harmful greenhouse gas emissions; and anchoring the Alliance for a Just Rebuilding and achieving a the Build it Back local hiring program in Sandy-impacted communities. Communications strategy:Direct, innovate, and implement the organization's comprehensive communication strategy, including organizational visibility, outreach strategies, and crafting institutional language.
Campaign messaging:Develop message and communications plans to advance priority campaigns; identify and manage strategic research needs; coach, train and develop grassroots leaders and senior staffers as spokespeople in collaboration with organizational partners and allies; produce detailed public reports; create rapid response public statements to press.
Digital mass engagement: Oversee the identification, growth, engagement, and mobilization of online activist base alongside ALIGN’s Communications Associate; add value to parners through creation of engaging, shareable digitial content; develop new mass engagement communications strategies to reach the “New American Majority” through online, phone, text, and direct mail communications; oversee management of mass-base lists in Voter Action Network and Powerbase CiviCRM.
Strategic planning & movement building:Serve as key partner to full staff in planning overall strategy for the organization across program areas and member organizations.
Commitment to the movement for social, economic and racial justice
At least 3 to 5 years experience leading communications at community, labor, or other social justice organizations.
Superior writing skills and demonstrated ability to write should be sharp, personable, and memorable content
Excellent verbal, public speaking, and interpersonal communication skills, in multiple settings and among people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences
Understands and effectively navigates New York political landscape and social justice movement
Ability to think strategically and resourcefully and to learn while doing, always with an eye towards details and creative problem solving
Strong work ethic and ability to remain flexible and focused in a fast-paced environment, and effectively prioritize deadlines
Energetic, steadfast & collaborative spirit, with the ability to work independently and take initiative as well as work collectively with others
Superior administrative & time management skills
