About LAANE: The Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE) has been in the forefront of the economic justice movement in L.A. since 1994. LAANE is known for its broad-based labor/community/environmental coalitions and its combination of organizing, research, communications, and policy development. LAANE led the movement to pass a Living Wage Ordinance in the city of L.A. in 1997 and continues to advocate for policies and programs that benefit the unemployed, low-wage workers, low-income communities and the environment. Project Description: LAANE is currently seeking a full-time organizer for a campaign for equitable investment in a solar programs at the nation’s largest municipally-owned utility. The campaign is advocating for a community solar program that helps low income customers and renters save money on their bills while creating good jobs and reducing our environmental impact. The community solar campaign builds on a successful effort to dramatically increase investment in energy efficiency programs that help struggling customers save money on their bills, reduce our city’s carbon emissions and create good, career path jobs. The campaign seeks to support and expand a pipeline for entry level workers to career path jobs at the Department of Water and Power that was created by IBEW Local 18 and the utility. Lead Organizer: We are seeking a qualified professional who will be able to work well with unions, community organizations, environmental groups, and public agencies. The Lead Organizer will recruit and develop leaders, contribute to campaign strategy, communicate and motivate existing and potential members, and lead pubic actions. The Lead Organizer will work directly with the Project Director, as well as with community and labor allies.



Recruitment: recruiting new members and new leaders.

Leadership development: developing and maintaining effective leaders through training and establishing committees and other leadership structures.

Communication: effectively communicate with workers in assigned jurisdictions through personal visits, including house visits, flyers, newsletters, phone calls, mailings, bulletin board postings, and meetings.


Other duties include:

Supervising interns

Working as part of a team to implement campaign strategy.

Planning and executing events and actions.

Participating in the LAANE Organizer Team and other organization-wide meetings and activities


Job Qualifications

5+ years full-time labor, community or constituency organizing experience

Experience leading other organizers is strongly preferred

Excellent communication skills and ability to work well with others

Ability to motivate and inspire others

Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends

Detail oriented, driven to succeed; ability to work independently and in a team

Commitment to excellence and to the mission and goals of the organization and the labor movement

In possession of a valid drivers’ license and reliable, insured transportation.

Knowledge of workforce development a plus.

Bilingual skills or fluency in second language a plus
