Long Beach Rising voter registration program reaches low-income residents

November 13, 2013 -- Partnership for Working Families

LAANE and sixteen allies at Long Beach Rising are driving a multifaceted, non-partisan civic engagement program.  On the heels of last fall’s stunning 64% living wage victory, Long Beach Rising continues to reach out to new voters.

Their efforts are paying off.  The number of registered voters in Long Beach increased by 4,839 people from May 1 through October 14 this year. That’s a healthy 2 percent increase in less than six months.

The highest increases were in Westside Districts 1, 6, 8 and 9.  These are diverse, low-income neighborhoods and have traditionally had low voter turnout.

Long Beach Rising has tracked multiple contacts with these new voters during the living wage campaign and voter registration efforts.  The next step for Long Beach Rising is to increase the number of residents in these districts who actually vote in April’s local elections.
