Voter Mobilization in Milwaukee Pays Off

Citizen Action of Wisconsin Education Fund continues to play a leading role in Milwaukee’s non-partisan voter mobilization work.  In the November 2012 election, Milwaukee voter turnout reached 87.2%, far surpassing the 80.3% turnout in 2008 (that was considered a high benchmark).

In 2012, Citizen Action of Wisconsin Fund is building a deeper civic engagement program out of our economic justice program. The project focuses first and foremost on the economic depression that has gripped Milwaukee’s people of color communities for the last three decades.

Lennise Vickers of Milwaukee was a first time volunteer for the Citizen Action of Wisconsin Education Fund non-partisan voter mobilization program in the 2012 recall election.

“I wanted to volunteer because I wanted to make sure that people in my county and city were able to get out to vote. The experience taking the individuals to the different polling sites was interesting. Each polling site had different circumstances and things going on. I had one individual who needed curbside assistance because they were disabled and couldn’t get into the polling site. It took a while to get someone to come out and help them vote. At another site, there was difficulty parking. But we made it. They were able to vote.

The Good Jobs and Livable Neighborhoods Project of Citizen Action of Wisconsin Education Fund is working with the Wisconsin Laborers District Council and the Laborers Great Lakes Region Organizing Committee on a campaign to shape Wisconsin’s expanded weatherization program.
