On the heels of a recently released report that studied issues facing those employed in construction, Charlotte construction workers and advocacy groups are calling for policy to encourage and enforce protections for workers on job sites. The Workers Defense Project, Partnership for Working Families and the University of Illinois at Chicago surveyed 1,435 construction workers in major construction markets in the southern U.S. The report, "Build a Better South," said that wage theft, limited opportunities for career advancement, health and safety concerns, and a lack of employment benefits were described by construction workers as common challenges in the six markets researched.
