OCCORD’s campaign to make Santa Ana city government more accountable is blazing hot! As one of the leaders of the Santa Ana Collaborative for Responsible Development (SACReD) Coalition, OCCORD has taken major steps toward passage of a “Sunshine Ordinance.” The Coalition’s effort has attracted plenty of attention.

...On July 2, the campaign won a major victory, with the Santa Ana City Council unanimously approving the campaign’s Sunshine Ordinance platform and instructing the City Attorney to draft an ordinance.

SAGE Celebrates Paid Sick Leave Victory

September 2012 will mark the first time an estimated 160,000 employees in Seattle will enjoy paid sick leave benefits. Only Washington, DC and San Francisco have similar laws protecting workers when they are sick. In September 2011, The Seattle City Council in an almost unanimous vote passed a policy mandating tiered Paid Sick Leave benefits.

LAANE Study Shows Century Corridor Hotel Living Wage Produces $23.9 Million in Economic Benefits

A recently released LAANE study found that the Century Corridor hotel living wage ordinance, combined with the successful negotiation of collective bargaining agreements at four LAX-adjacent hotels, will produce $23.9 million in economic benefits. In 2006, a coalition of community members, workers and clergy leaders joined together as the Coalition for a New Century in an effort to transform thousands of low-wage hotel jobs into family-sustaining jobs and to upgrade a lackluster L.A. tourism district that is often the first glimpse visitors have of the region.

LAANE Helps Bring Family Healthcare to Thousands of LAX Workers

In a sweeping victory for working families, the Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously last month to make a long-overdue update to the city’s living wage ordinance. This update will raise the living wage in order to provide access to quality family healthcare for thousands of private sector LAX airline service workers. A year in the making, the vote amends the living wage to provide an increase to the healthcare allotment, meaning that families who have never had private healthcare will now be able to seek medical treatment and care.

The Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE) won two major policy victories in 2008 that will expand opportunity and improve job standards for workers, while also combating port-related pollution.  LAANE also won a legal battle that paved the way for the implementation of a living wage law for 3,500 hotel workers.
