Economic Justice Organizer

Pittsburgh United is a coalition of community, labor, faith, and environmental organizations committed to building a community and economy that work for all people. The Economic Justice Organizer is responsible for leading and coordinating the Worker Organizing Table, which coordinates solidarity actions and builds strategic campaigns with progressive unions and community allies. In the past, the Worker Organizing Table has run campaigns to win Paid Sick Days in Pittsburgh, for transparency around Amazon HQ2, and provided community support for the Fight for $15 and a variety of local collective bargaining fights.

Previous experience working in coalition and with/for organized labor is necessary for this position.

Scope of Responsibility

The Economic Justice Organizer will be responsible for working with the Organizing Director, Executive Director, and coalition partners to develop, implement, and win strategic campaigns. This will include working closely with new and existing coalition partners and experts to develop effective policy and/or campaign goals, planning and implementing educational activities, coordinating and overseeing public policy advocacy, developing materials for the coalition’s use on issue campaigns, and assisting the Executive Director in identifying, raising and managing campaign funds.

The Economic Justice Organizer is responsible for building and exercising the relationships necessary to organize the Worker Organizing Table effectively and for organizing campaign partners from all sectors to achieve campaign goals. The ability to build strong relationships and work closely with and support the leadership of others is therefore an essential skill.

Essential Duties and Activities

Coalition Organizing and Management

  • Building and maintaining effective relationships with existing campaign partners, new campaign partners, allies, community members, elected officials, stakeholders, and leaders in the economic justice space as well as building solidarity between these partners

  • Frequent (weekly/biweekly) check-ins with table partners; at least monthly check-ins with allies

  • Developing the capacity of table partners to understand and participate effectively in campaigns

  • Planning and facilitating meetings to further strategic campaigns

Campaign Planning and Execution

  • Lead the development of strategic campaigns

  • Create processes that allow partners to effectively participate in campaigns

  • Plan and execute meetings, events, actions, or other strategic activities that further the goals of campaigns

  • Monitor and/or participate in governmental and public meetings and processes related to Pittsburgh United’s economic justice campaigns, including lobbying and testifying

Communications and Data

  • Work with the digital organizer and communications team to promote events, resources, actions, etc.

  • Act as a spokesperson for the campaign; develop table partners to act as spokespeople

  • Speak at events to highlight the campaign where appropriate

  • Maintain various campaign lists and data systems

Fundraising and Administration

  • Build relationships with funders/program officers in coordination with the Executive Director

  • Participate in grant writing and reporting when appropriate

  • Maintain organized digital and physical campaign records

  • Maintain timesheets and calendar, especially for lobbying activities

Qualifications and Skills

  • Demonstrated skills in organizing and community outreach, particularly in coalitions with organized labor; More than five years of experience preferred

  • Experience in developing and implementing a successful campaign strategy

  • Superior interpersonal skills and ability to work with a diverse array of individuals and communities and challenge people to take risks in order to make change

  • Experience leading a team in project work

  • Experience with advocacy and/or public policy

  • Ability to receive and integrate performance based feedback into ongoing work plans as well as the ability to provide relevant and timely feedback to peers in a constructive manner

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated commitment to racial, social, economic, and environmental justice as well as strengthening the labor movement

  • Commitment to understanding race, class, gender and other equity issues as part of the work as well as the impact these structural issues have on our collective work

  • Passion for working for economic justice in our region

  • PA Drivers license and access to a vehicle (preferred)

Other Information: The work schedule can at times be greater than 40 hours per week and includes some evening and weekend meetings and events, as necessary. It is not a strictly 9am-5pm position. Travel is occasionally required around the Pittsburgh region or to state and national conferences related to economic justice.

The Economic Justice Organizer is a full-time exempt position. Salary range is $45,000-$55,000 (commensurate with experience) with a generous benefits package including health, dental, and vision insurance.
